By  Josh Raynolds

2011 El Pedrosal Ribera Del Duero($24) (all tempranillo; aged in American oak):  Deep ruby.  Oak-spiced dark berries and cherry on the fragrant nose.  Smoky and gently sweet, offering open-knit blackberry and vanilla flavors and a touch of coconut.  Supple tannins frame the finish, which clings with very good authority and repeating spiciness. 90 points.

2010 Vina Pedrosa La Navilla Ribera Del Duero($50) Deep ruby.  Vibrant, mineral-accented red berry and floral pastille aromas are given depth by notes of licorice and vanilla.  Juicy and focused on entry, then broader and fleshier in the mid-palate, offering sappy blackberry and bitter cherry flavors and an exotic touch of oak spice.  Supple tannins frame the long, sweet finish, which features suave mocha and floral pastille qualities. 92 points.

2010 Vina Pedrosa Ribera Del Duero Crianza($38) (all tempranillo, was aged in a combination of French and American oak for 18 months):  Deep ruby.  Spicy, focused dark berry, cherry, licorice and pipe tobacco aromas are complicated by notes of vanilla and woodsmoke.  On the palate, sappy, penetrating blackberry and bitter cherry flavors gain in sweetness with air while retaining excellent clarity.  Youthful tannins give shape and grip to the finish, which lingers with outstanding tenacity and appealing sweetness.  91 points.

2006 Vina Pedrosa Ribera Del Duero Gran Reserva($96) (90% tempranillo and 10% cabernet sauvignon):  Brilliant ruby.  Displays lively, mineral-accented red fruit and floral pastille scents, picking up a peppery aspect and a hint of vanilla with aeration.  Nervy and focused on the palate, offering bitter cherry and redcurrant flavors that turn sweeter on the back half.  Showing quite a bit of youthful character for its age, with zesty acidity adding lift and cut to the long, gently tannic finish. 91 points.
